After Zhuge Liang returned to Xiakou, he immediately made arrangements for an ambush along the route where Cao Cao's army was retreating.
He instructed Zhao Yun to take 3,000 troops for an ambush at Black Forest and Zhang Fei to bring another 3,000 for the ambush at Hulu Valley.
Noticing he wasn't given a role in this mission, Guan Yu spoke up. It was then that Zhuge Liang expressed his concern about Guan Yu letting Cao Cao go if they came face-to-face at Huarong Path. Guan Yu insisted that he would never allow that to happen and even gave a military undertaking.
As Zhuge Liang had predicted, Cao Cao ended up retreating to Huarong Path when he ran into Zhao Yun and Zhang Fei. Coming face-to-face with Guan Yu, he begged Guan Yu to let him go. Feeling guilty for killing 6 of Cao Cao's generals, Guan Yu reluctantly let Cao Cao go.
When Guan Yu returned, Zhuge Liang ordered him to be dragged out for execution. Zhao Yun and Zhang Fei begged Zhuge Liang to forgive Guan Yu and let him make up for his mistake.
Henceforth, Liu Bei and Cao Cao and Sun Quan became the 3 rulers of the realm.
